Natural Hair Chronicles: Moisture Matters!

"My hair is dry, my scalp is itching, and my dandruff is out of control!"

If this is you, the fix could be as simple as learning to moisturize your hair properly. We recommend trying the LCO or LOC Method!

But first...Let's figure out your hair porosity!

In essence, hair porosity is a phrase used to describe your hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. The porosity of your hair influences how well oils and moisture pass through your hair, as well as which products may be best for your tresses.

For your hair to stay healthy and hydrated, water, oils, and other moisturizing products need to be able to pass through the cuticle to get to the cortex.

  • The cuticle: The hair cuticle is the outermost part of the hair shaft formed from dead cells, overlapping in layers, which form scales that strengthen and protect

  • The cortex: The cortex forms the main bulk and color of your hair. The health of your cortex depends largely on the integrity of the cuticle protecting it.

If the cuticles are too close, it’s not easy for water and oils to penetrate the hair. This will make it more difficult for your hair to get the moisture it needs.

If the cuticles are too widely spaced, your hair will have a harder time retaining moisture and staying hydrated.

Here's how you can test your hair porosity

  1. If your hair strand floats at the top before sinking, you likely have low porosity hair.

  2. If the hair floats around the middle of the glass, you probably have medium or normal porosity hair.

  3. If the hair immediately sinks to the bottom of the glass, you likely have high porosity hair.

Now that you've learned your hair porosity, let's moisturize!

If you have High Porosity Hair: Try the LOC Method;

1. Hydrate your hair with liquid(water or a spray leave-in)

2. Next, add oil to seal the moisture

3. Lastly, you should apply a cream or butter onto the hair strands.

The cream should be the last step for high porosity hair because it has the thickest consistency, and it'll hold in moisture.

If you have Low Porosity HAIR: Try the LCO Method

1. Hydrate your hair with liquid (water or a spray leave-in).

2. Next, you should apply a cream or butter to your hair strands.

3. Lastly, add oil to seal the moisture.

This will allow moisture to penetrate deep within the hair shaft, which is crucial for low-porosity hair since it tends to oppose moisture.

Know that this is a guide to get you started, and you just may find that your High Porosity hair just may hold moisture better with the LCO method. If you're up give both methods a try and discover what truly works for YOU!
